I like to make blocks. Not a whole quilt--just a block or two. When Henrietta described her *new* book to me, well, I had to order one too!
Henrietta's review of the book is here. My first block, (pink bottom) was to learn the method. The 2nd block (blue roosters) in another color/bigger print. The 3rd block in two colors to test how the points came out. These were the basic block pattern in the book.
Notice the *lines* in the bottom block. You don't *see* those lines at first, but stripes would be interesting with this method. Yes, there is some waste, but this method is PAINLESS. Please enlarge my pictures, check the points. I have not trimmed these blocks. I was not particularly careful (other than following the diagrams) when I made them. Followed the directions as far as cutting, marking, and pressing. This book has GREAT tips and directions. Tables for blocks in different sizes. 30 different 8 pointed star blocks. These blocks came out to a perfect 12" finished.
Stars by Magic was bought used through Amazon. I paid $6.45 plus 3.99 shipping. Total--$10.45. The book arrived quickly, less than a week. The book is in like-new condition. It was well worth it!
Most my quilt books are bought used. Do you buy used books??

It is interesting that what looks like a plain calico is in fact a directional fabric, but it looks great.
I am impressed with this book as you know and I also buy most of my books used, not just quilt books.
I buy used books if I can and they're cheaper than the new.
I use Amazon a lot, but I also find them on eBay or half.ebay.com.
my mom is fascinated with stars....I may get this book for her....since her bday was last Sun....
Looks like you're having fun making blocks from your "new" book. I buy a lot of used books through Amazon for the library...probably 50% of the books we get. Most are in like new condition and sure make the dollars go further.
Good job on the points! I buy new books because I usually impulse buy books and I never think to look for books on Amazon or Ebay. Maybe I should start and save a few bucks which I can then spend on fabric.
My points are not quite as perfect as yours, but then I think you are a more accurate piecer than I am. That said, if anyone stood over one of my quilts and pointed out I had missed a point by 1/16 of an inch I would club them and hide the body.
Mary Kay I used to impulse buy books too and maybe this is why Borders is going belly up. I cannot justify $24.95 for a book right now when I can put it on my wishlist and buy it for less than half price a few months later.
Yes, I have bought some duds online but if I can learn one thing from a book I don't consider it a waste of time and money!
If I am worried about a book being a dud, I look at the library, if they don't have it, they can get it for you from another library. They do usually charge you postage one direction. But if I am pleased with the book, I will buy it, used of course.
I buy used books from them all the time. I went over to check and the cheapest one now is $11.50. You started something here! LOL. I'm tempted, but I'll wait a bit, I think. It looks like fun!
I do buy used books. Books cost too much so I look for a good price as often as possible.
I love this book! The stars always turn out great. I figure a little fabric waste is better than me tearing my hair out and then still throwing it out since it came out wonky.
