A turkey hen comes every evening to snack on spilled bird seed.  I'm sure she has a nest somewhere close.  Soon we hope to see baby turkeys.

I'm Back!

I'm back, was missing from blogland because I wasn't able to post from my tablet and had forgotten my laptop at home.   We moved the camper on May 22nd and I started volunteering the next day.  On the way to my camp spot all the tread peeled from one of the camper tires.  But since it didn't go FLAT we decided to continue and drive very slowly.  30 miles and I made it to the campground!  No changing tires along the road.  Ken said that was my one "pass" for the year.  He was right. On Thursday I left the Visitor Center to find this--

Not a clue what happened, but I'll guess it was a rock thrown from a mower.  But, no one saw it happen, or reported that it had happened.  To be fair, your attention is watching where you are driving, and they wear big ear protectors for the noise of the mowers and may not have even realized it had happened.  sigh  Next, my microwave died.  Chip, who lives next door, says it can be fixed very cheaply, but I needed my microwave NOW so off to town to pick one up.  We'll fix the other one later.  Through this all I haven't felt well.  Summer cold/allergies I thought.  Over Memorial Day weekend ended up in ER, bacterial bronchitis.  Followup Dr. visit yesterday confirmed still have infection, will start 2nd antibiotic.  So I've had the strength of a cooked noodle.  

But my bird feedes are up, I have orioles who are PIGS they eat so much grape jelly!  Hummingbirds, finches, warblers, chickadees and more.  The robins like when I water my grass--they are busy looking for worms.  And the bird bath, well, they almost have to take numbers they are so busy bathing and drinking! 

Although I haven't done much piecing, I have been hand sewing binding.  I finished my 30's quilt--

Bad picture, bright sun washed the photo out but its all I have.  These are some blocks from my 2013 Rainbow Scrap challenge using my box of 30's fabric and a vintage pattern from a magazine.  I dyed a wide flannel backing, a pretty sky blue, the color of the sky here.  Tomorrow I can count the yards used in my stash report!  WOOHOO!

I also worked on my green challenge blocks.  They aren't done but the color this month is green and I LOVE green.  Please see everyone's posts at soscrappy.

We have a graduate in the family--

Mason graduated preschool and starts kindergarten this fall.  He CAN'T be that old yet!!

In between farming, spring time errands and rain I finished a Brown Diamond quilt from an old Fons and Porter book.   81x105", I estimate it used 14 yards of stash.

Sunday Stash Report

A few finishes this week.  First I finished a Bricks and Stepping Stones quilt, 86x108".  Free pattern at Quiltville.com. I estimate I used 14yds of fabric.

Next I finished Sunny Lanes from the book Nickel Quilts.  Its a big quilt 115x115".  About 20 yds of fabric.

So my new numbers are--

Sunday Stash Report

New numbers this week, I added 10 yards of various fabrics from Iowa.  On Tuesday I bought 4 yards of batik for borders/binding for Island Chain.  I used 4 yards to back a QOV for my guild.  So that is--

Wow, never thought the numbers would come out even.  I have 8 tops waiting for binding, and no plans to purchase any fabric.  At least, right now!  Please see everyone's stash report at Patchwork Times. 

Rainbow Scrappy Saturday

April's color was purple.  Purple is a hard color for me, I really have very little purple in my stash.  The Iowa Ladies (Lorri2Rs, Gina and Rhonda) helped me out.

Ladies, do you see your fabric in there?  With their help I was able to make 4 blocks--

I'm making Album blocks or Great Granny Square blocks.  I'm not trimming them, I'll do that when I have them all made.  Right now I plan on setting them with neutral sashing and "floating" the blocks unless I see another setting I like better.  May's color is green.  I have a lot of green, its my FAVORITE color.  Please see everyone's projects at soscrappy.

 

Design Wall Monday and Weekly Goals

These are what I worked on this weekend--

40 pinwheel blocks for the borders of Honeysweet Pinwheels.  Please see everyone's design wall at Patchwork Times.  I spent the weekend sewing with the Iowa ladies.  Remember that I said these women are hard core quilters?  I made a sign to hang on the door--

One of the ladies is a massage therapist, and her vehicle has her business name and phone number on it.  A few gentlemen studied the vehicle in front of the door, then must have seen the sign.  Gina received a phone call asking if she was in town giving massages?  I do wish they had come inside, would we have been a surprise??  (We sew at the local Sr. Center)

We also made the trek to the fabric store and I did a little stash enhancing.  Not a lot of yardage--

Mostly TOTs for sashings/borders/bindings, a few lights (my stash is sadly lacking in lights) and a couple of purples.   I better get to work on binding before my yardage in overtakes my yardage out!  The QOV from my guild is loaded and ready to quilt--

Its a bento box quilt in red/white/blue.  

Weekly Goals--

1. Quilt QOV
2. Setting triangles on Spinning blocks
3. Honeysweet Pinwheel center together
4. Bind a quilt

A short list, I'm tired from sewing in Iowa.  Its cold and rainy right now and no change in weather forecast for the rest of the week.  Good weather to stay inside and sew.  Summer is coming though, I need to get the camper cleaned and packed.  I'm looking forward to volunteering again this summer.  Do you have plans?  A vacation?
  

 

Design Wall Monday and Weekly Goals

3. Load QOV top/piece backing

Its going to be a short week.  Fri-Sat-Sun is sewing with the Iowa ladies.  I need to rest up, those ladies are serious sewers!  Saturday I finished quilting a Bricks and Stepping Stones top--

 

Next will be trimming/binding it.  I set a personal goal of 10 tops quilted by May 1st, this was #10.  I love this pattern, (thank you Bonnie Hunter) its an anything goes for fabric.  Finishes to 86x106", a nice bed size.  My thread choices were a little different.  I had two threads I liked--

  

A dark purple Permacore and a variegated YLI called Hollyhock.  The Princess likes Permacore.  The YLI was noticeably thicker, especially in the darker dyed sections.  I have had the dark dyed sections be weaker and break during quilting (what a headache).  I thought, what if I put the variegated in the bobbin and it didn't have the stress from running through the needle at high speed?  It worked like a charm.  The dark thread blends in on the busy front, and the variegated looks pretty on the backing--

The weather is definitely more like spring.  The grass is getting green, trees are budding, robins are staking out territories.  Today we put the snowblower away and got out the patio set.

Design Wall Monday and Weekly Goals

These blocks are on my design wall--

Its a Kim Brackett pattern called Island Chain.  I made the quilt bigger and it has given me lots of headaches.  Truly--headaches!  I have to sit on a chair in front of the wall with the book/picture.  I need my glasses to see the picture.  Then, when looking at the wall I shove my glasses on top of my head.  I pieced parts of the blocks as I put them on the wall, not my favorite method but necessary to make the interlocking pattern appear.  Not interlocking so much as optical illusion.  This is hopefully the final layout.  See everyone's design walls at Patchwork Times.

I finished quilting the Ozark Leaf quilt.  That quilt does NOT want to be a finish!  While quilting the little green flange strip wanted to flip over. Grrr.  But Ken made a quick trip to the Dollar store for Elmer's School glue.  I glued the edge down, then took the iron and pressed/dried it flat.  

Yes, while it was on the Princess.  Used my hand underneath as the pressing mat.  I had to do each section as I advanced it on the rollers, but it WORKED!!  Never overlook School glue as a tool while quilting!

Weekly Goals--

1. work on Island Chain
2. quilt a top
3. hand sew binding

Those will be my goals this week.  No goals last week, I went to stay with LB and Nick, attend guild, babysit the boys while they were house hunting.  The offer they put in on a house has been accepted, now its just the endless details.  The weather was beautiful while I was there, Saturday everyone went to the park.

The weather has turned cold again but we didn't get any snow.  Highs are in the 40's dropping to the low 20's at night.  

No plans for this week, just stay warm and sew.  I have a few tulips coming up and saw the columbine and peonies were peeking out.  Doubt they're doing any growing in this cold--they better wait for warmer weather!

This week has flow by!  This is what I am working on--

The pattern is called Honeysweet Pinwheels.  You can make it whatever size you'd like, the blocks finish to 16".  Although I HATE making HSTs, I am loving the blocks.  Check out everyone's design walls at Patchwork Times.

Fri-Sat-Sun I sewed with the Iowa ladies.  They are hard core quilters!  Some ladies started at 6am and one night we sewed until 11:30pm.  I stayed with Lorri 2Rs--I had a blast!  Never pass up an opportunity to sew with others.

Rhonda has been working on this quilt for over 15 years.  Its a present for her aunt--

Her aunt came to sew with us on Sunday and didn't recognize the quilt Rhonda had promised her 15 years ago.  When she found out it was for her--she cried!!  Look at all the tiny pieces, isn't it a beautiful quilt??

March is roaring out like a lion.  The wind is howling, the temp has dropped 20 degrees, and its going to SNOW.  Right now its spitting rain.  Temps tonight are going to drop to 12 degrees.  Noon was 58 degrees.  I better check my spare propane tank for my portable heater.  I don't think the power will go out, but I want to be prepared.  

Design Wall Monday and Weekly Goals

This is what I'm working on--

Its been waiting to be quilted, its called Sunny Lanes and its from a Nickel Quilts book by Pat Speth.  A large quilt, about 115" square.  It was a "camper project".  I worked on it while camping several years ago.  The pieced backing is hanging on the wall behind it, I had spritzed it with water to relax the wrinkles and creases.  I learned that from Mary.  Unless things go awry I plan to finish the quilting this week.  Please see everyone's design walls at Patchwork Times.

Weekly Goals--last week's goals didn't do so well!  Although I did lots of sewing, none of it was on my list.  And then I decided to visit the grandchildren, better plan anyway.  

This week's goals--

1. Finish quilting Sunny Lanes
2. Trim Iowa guild group project HSTs
3. Make a binding
4. Finish sewing Summers at the Lake

That will keep me busy.
